Fotogroep 68 is een collectief van autonome fotografen in Limburg dat in 1968 is opgericht. Deze fotografen hanteren de fotografie als persoonlijk uitdrukkingsmiddel.

In de afgelopen jaren heeft fotogroep 68 ook een bijdrage geleverd aan het wekken van belangstelling voor de autonome fotografie in de regio. Daartoe trad de groep in zijn geheel of in subgroepen naar buiten met exposities. Er waren exposities in meerdere plaatsen van Nederland, België, Duitsland, Frankrijk en de Verenigde Staten.

In 1978 heeft fotogroep 68, ter gelegenheid van haar tienjarig bestaan, een zelfstandige fotogalerie opgericht. Deze galerie was gevestigd in het poortgebouw van Kasteel Hoensbroek. Middels dit initiatief heeft Fotogroep 68 in belangrijke mate bijgedragen aan het promoten van de autonome fotografie in de regio. In haar vijtienjarige bestaan bouwde Fotogalerie 68 een internationale reputatie op. Zij trok, tot haar gedwongen sluiting in 1993 zo’n kwart miljoen bezoekers.

In 1993 organiseerde Fotogroep 68 ter gelegenheid van haar vijfentwintig jarig bestaan op vijf historische locaties in Limburg een simultaantentoonstelling genaamd “Fotopad 93”. Ter gelegenheid van deze tentoonstelling gaf fotogroep 68 ook een catalogus uit. Naast de leden van de fotogroep 68 namen ook 29 fotografen uit de regio’s Luik (B), Aken (D) en Hasselt (B) en uit Nederlands Limburg deel aan deze tentoonstelling die een goed beeld gaf van de stand van zaken van de vrije fotografie in de Euregio Maas-Rijn.

In 1998 trad de groep opnieuw naar buiten met een omvangrijke fotomanifestatie in het streekmuseum Land van Valkenburg te Valkenburg en in het Kreismuseum te Heinsberg (Noordrijn/Westfalen). Deze manifestatie bestond enerzijds uit een tentoonstelling van werk van eigen leden samen met de gastexposanten Stephen Shore (USA), Mark Klett (USA) en John Davies (UK) omlijst door lezingen over aspecten van de fotografie. Tevens werd er een catalogus uitgebracht die de tentoonstelling documenteerde en artikelen bevatte over de betekenis van Fotogalerie 68 in de context van de Limburgse vrije fotografie.

Fotogroep 68 is a group of independent photographers in Limburg, the Netherlands, which was established in 1968. For these photographers, photography is a way to express them selves personally.

In the past years, Fotogroep 68 has contributed to increase the enthusiasm for independent photography in the region, through expositions from the complete group as well as from smaller subgroups. There have been expositions at different locations in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France and the United States.

1978, at the 10th anniversary of the group, fotogroep 68 has established an independent photogalery. This gallery was located in the gateway building of the castle “Kasteel Hoensbroek”, Hoensbroek (NL). With this photo gallery, Fotogroep 68 has been able to promote the independent photography in the region. The photo gallery has been open for 15 years and in these years, the gallery has build up an international reputation. Up until the forced closure in 1993, the gallery has welcomed approximately 250.000 visitors.

1993, at the 25th anniversary of the group, Fotogroep 68 has organized a simultaneous exposition at 5 historical locations in Limburg, called “Fotopad 93”, and for this exposition, Fotogroep 68 also published a catalogue. The exposition did not only show work of the members of the Fotogroep 68, but also work of 29 photographers from the regions Liège (B), Aachen (D), Hasselt (B) and from Limburg (NL), so that the exposition presented a very good overview of the quality of independent photography in the region Euregio Maas-Rijn.

1998, the group organized an extensive Photo event in the local museum “Land van Valkenburg” in Valkenburg (NL) and in the museum “Kreismuseum” in Heinsberg (D). This photo event existed of an exposition of work of the members of the group, as well as work of guest photographers Stephen Shore (USA), Mark Klett (USA) and John Davies (UK). Furthermore, the event was expanded with readings concerning the different aspects of photography. This event also has been documented in a catalogue, which contains the work exposed and several articles about the influence of the Photo gallery 68 in the context of the independent photography in Limburg.
