Aan het eind van de jaren zestig ondernam Henry Witpeerd zijn eerste reis naar de Nieuwe Wereld. Met een grote Amerikaanse slee reisde hij onder andere over de toen reeds legendarische Route 66 terwijl de Interstate 55 reeds in aanleg was als vervanger van "good old 66". Het onderwerp "Route 66" heeft hem niet meer losgelaten. De kleine stadjes met hun Mainstreets, hun tientallen tankstationnetjes, de vele motels, de oude grocerystores. Van dit alles zijn in de meeste gevallen slechts de ruines over; alles is vervallen, oude auto’s staan vaak als wrakken langs de weg, de motelletjes zijn allang niet meer bewoond. Heel wat stadjes zijn verdwenen of staan alleen nog als Ghosttown op de kaart. Een belangrijk deel van de fotografie van Henry Witpeerd bestaat uit het vastleggen van dit soort situaties. De laatste twintig jaar ligt zijn passie duidelijk in de Verenigde Staten van Amerika, waarvan hij inmiddels op een enkele na, alle staten heeft doorkruist. Op die reizen beoefent Henry Witpeerd niet alleen de klassieke landschapsfotografie maar ook de artistieke documentaire fotografie. Een en ander resulteerde in portfolio’s als "Route 66", "Ghost Topwns", "Abandoned Gasstations" e.a . In 1982 werd Henry Witpeerd door de landsregering van Rheinland-Westfalen benoemd tot Fotographischer Ausbilder.

At the end of the sixties, Henry Witpeerd made his first trip to the New World. With a big American cabriolet he travelled among others the than already legendary Route 66 while at that time the Interstate 55 was already partly finished in order to replace the "good old 66". The subject "Route 66" fascinated him since. The small towns with their Mainstreets, the numerous gasoline stations, abandoned motels, old grocerystores. Of all this in nearly all cases only ruins are left, everything is dilapidated, very often the remains of old cars are left behind along the road, the small motels are left and damaged. A lot of the small towns just disappeared and they were left on the roadmaps only as Ghosttowns. An important aspect of the photography of Henry Witpeerd consists of the registration of these sort of situations. The last twenty years his passion is clearly situated in the United States of America; here he nearly visited all the states. On his travels Henry Witpeerd not only concentrates on classical landscape photography but also on artistic documentary photography. This resulted in portfolio’s like "Route 66", "Ghost Towns", "Abandoned Gasstations" e.o. In 1982 Henry Witpeerd was appointed Teacher in Photography by the government of Nordrhein-Westfalen Germany.
