Nico Bastens is geboren en opgegroeid in Maastricht, Nederland. Hij werkt bij een sociaal maatschappelijk huisvester. Daarnaast is hij autonoom fotograaf die midden jaren negentig zijn intrede in de fotografie maakte. Lange tijd bleef hij een bescheiden amateur. Totdat zijn wens zich te verbeteren en te professionaliseren hem deed besluiten de 3-jarige opleiding tot professioneel fotograaf te volgen aan de Nederlandse Fotovakschool. Hij slaagde in 2009 met als specialisatie documentaire fotografie. Op dit moment studeert hij voor een hogere graad aan de Fotoacademie in Amsterdam, opnieuw in documentaire fotografie.
In zijn eigen woorden: “Documentaire fotografie is de fotografie van het leven. In beelden raakt het sociale aangelegenheden, beschrijft de alledaagse werkelijkheid en gaat over zaken die verdwijnen. Het is de kunst om die realiteit, momenten, situaties en expressies vast te leggen in één enkel of combinatie van fotografische beelden. Daarin ligt mijn facinatie en grote passie. Documentaire fotografie is een uitdaging, omdat er zoveel dingen buiten je controle vallen. In tegenstelling tot in een studio vallen de omgeving, de mensen, het gebeuren en het licht buiten je invloedsfeer. Je kunt deze niet dirigeren, het gebeurt en is er gewoon. Het is aan jou om er op het juiste tijdstip te zijn, het te zien en dat moment te vangen waarin alles in elkaar past. Daar moet je oog en geduld voor hebben, maar soms is en komt dat moment er gewoon niet.
Alhoewel hij een voorkeur heeft voor zwart-wit fotografie sluit hij kleurenfotografie niet uit. In zijn eigen woorden: “Zwart-wit fotografie brengt je terug tot de essentie van het onderwerp. Het leidt de kijker niet af door kleuren die van geen betekenis zijn voor dat beeld, hij kan zich concentreren op de kern van de foto. Echter in andere gevallen kunnen kleuren de foto juist weer kracht en betekenis geven. Het is aan de fotograaf hierover te beslissen.

Besides that he is an autonomous photographer who made his access to photography in the mid-nineties. Long time he remained an unpretentious amateur. Than his desire to improve and professionalize led him to follow the 3-year study to professional photographer at the Nederlandse Fotovakschool. He graduaded in 2009, specialized in documentary. Currently he is studying for a higher degree at the Fotoacademie in Amsterdam, again in documentary photography.
As he himself says: " Documentary photography is the photography of life. In images it affects social affairs, describes all day reality and deals about things which are vanishing. It is the art to capture this reality, those moments, situations and expressions in one single or combination of all saying photographic images. Therein lies my fascination and great love for it. Documentary photography is a challenge, because there are so many things which are out of your control. Unlike in a studio the scenery, the people, the happening and the light aren't yours. You cannot direct it, it’s just there and it just happens. It’s up to you to be there, to see it and seize the moment in which everything fits together. For that you have to be patient and sometimes it just doesn't happen.
Although he has a preference for black and white photography he does not exclude colour photography. In his own words: "Black and white photography brings one back to the essence of the subject. It doesn't distracts the viewers eye by colours which are of no importance to that scenery, he can concentrate and focus himself on the essence in the image. However, in other cases the colours give the image power and meaning. It's up to the photographer to decide".
